Shades Fantastic Voyage Through The Ages

This Fantastic Voyage is my musical journey from when I started actively listening to and purchasing music when I was 8 years old. I had to cull a few songs and I could probably have chosen three times as many.

  1. Take on Me - a-ha

This was the first full length vinyl I bought, when it came out in '84. A good start to the journey.

  1. West End Girls (2001 Remaster) - Pet Shop Boys

This is still to this day one of my favorite Pet Shop Boys tunes. This one I bought on a CD Maxi Single.

  1. Stripped - Depeche Mode

When I was a teenager, I listened a lot to DM and their 80-00 catalog is impressive. This one starts with an engine igniting.

  1. Think About You - Guns N' Roses

Until 88, I had mainly listened to synthpop. When I heard Gn'R the first time, I realized that good music can be of any genre. It opened up my mind for all kinds of music. Jeremy - Pearl Jam No one who was around in 91 hasn't heard this one. Doing the Unstuck - The Cure The Cure's album Wish made me discover them and they have become a band I come back to over and over Only Entertainment - Bad Religion Bad Religion has been really productive for a long time and when you hear them you immediately know it's them. This one is a bit poppier than a lot of others of theirs. Higher State of Consciousness (Tweekin Acid Funk) - Josh Wink In 95, I started listening a bit more to electronic music (House, Trance, etc). This one was played a lot at University. Ingenting någonsin - Kent These guys were the biggest band in Sweden for about 20 years and they came at a time when we needed them. This particular one sounds a bit like shoegazing, and that is something I really like. Special K - Placebo When commuting to my first “real” job, in 2004, I used to listen to Placebo - Sleeping With Ghosts album. This one is not from that one, but a really good song, too. Trigger - In Flames In 2008, when working in Stockholm, I had a colleague that really liked metal. He played a few songs of In Flames and I was hooked. The guys are also from my hometown, Gothenburg, on the west coast of Sweden. This one is a real banger! Common Reactor - Silversun Pickups When moving to San Francisco in 2012, Silversun Pickups became my soundtrack. Driving around in the sun with the top down with this blasting on the stereo is a real treat. In Blur - Deafheaven When I first heard about Blackgaze (Black Metal / Shoegazing), I was intrigued. Deafheaven pissed off a lot of metalheads due to their flower filled lyrics and pink album covers. This one is from their latest album and is a lot more accessible than the earlier ones. If you want to hear more, take a look at the album Sunbather. How Not To Drown - CHVRCHES, Robert Smith Chvrches has done some sweet tunes and having Robert Smith from The Cure takes this to another level. It's a very recent song. Running in the Night - FM-84, Ollie Wride Around 2019, I heard about Synthwave and once more, I was hooked. I really enjoy the 80's vibe. This one could have easily been made in 85. Gloria - The Midnight Another synthwave song, in this case by a 2 man band from LA. It's a bit more mainstream, but really good. The end of this disc is upbeat and happy. Sandekala - Rangga Electroscope This is the latest earworm. A synthwave artist from Indonesia and there's something about it that makes me want to listen to it over and over.

This is the journey so far, and who knows where the music adventures take me in the future. I hope it will also influence your journey!
